Yannoulis Chalepas - Sculptor

1869-1876

1869-1876

In 1869, the entire family moved to Athens so that Yannoulis could attend sculpture classes at the Polytechnic. It was a time when he woke up in the morning full of dreams, desires, and hopes. He was eager to express his talent and develop his passion for creation. His teacher was the Greco-Bavarian Leonidas Drosis. He graduated with honors in 1872, at just twenty-one years old.

In 1873, with a scholarship from the Evangelistria Foundation of Tinos, he went to Munich, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. During that period, classical art of ancient Greece was predominant in the arts. His teacher was the famous sculptor Max von Widnmann.

In Munich, he exhibited his works 'The Fairy Tale of Beauty' and 'The Satyr Playing with Eros', for which he was awarded the Gold Medal.

In early spring of 1876, he returned to Athens and opened his own workshop.
