1577-1614
In 1577, El Greco's presence is recorded in Spain. Initially, he settled in Madrid and later in Toledo, a city that was then the religious and political center of Spain. In Toledo, he created some of his most famous works during his mature period and achieved establishment. There, he had a son, Jorge Manuel (Georgios Emmanuel), with Jerónima de las Cuevas.
His workshop experienced its greatest flourishing during the period 1600-1607. The last commission undertaken by Theotokopoulos was for the Hospital de Tavera in Toledo, for which he collaborated with his son. He died on April 7, 1614, before completing the work, and was initially buried in the church of Santo Domingo in Toledo. In 1619, his son moved his remains to the church of San Torcuato, which was later demolished, resulting in the loss of his coffin. In the inventory compiled by his son after El Greco's death, there were 143 completed paintings, 45 plaster or clay models, 150 drawings, 30 designs for retables, and 200 engravings.
