(Doménikos Theotokópoulos) - El Greco - Painter

Dominikos Theotokopoulos, also known by his Spanish nickname El Greco, which means "The Greek," was a Cretan painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. He lived most of his life away from Greece, creating the majority of his works in Italy and Spain. Initially trained as an icon painter in Heraklion, which was then part of Venetian-ruled Crete, he later traveled to Venice. In Italy, he was influenced by prominent masters of Italian art such as Tintoretto and Titian, whose pupil he became, adopting elements of Mannerism.

Stylistically, El Greco's technique is considered an expression of the Venetian School and Mannerism as it developed in the latter half of the 16th century. Simultaneously, it is characterized by personal elements, products of his tendency toward originality. Baroque art eventually displaced Mannerism, and later artistic movements did not favor his style, leading to the neglect of El Greco's work in the subsequent centuries.

During the 20th century, he was recognized as a precursor to modern art, synthesizing elements from Eastern and Western traditions. His work was reassessed and continues to hold a prominent position among the major painters of all time.

Yannoulis Chalepas - Sculptor

The Tower of Tinos is considered the center of modern Greek sculpture. Walking through its picturesque cobblestone paths, one encounters at every turn the signs of art and artistic creation or expression. Dominating the surroundings are the primary materials: stone, wood, marble, and clay. This beautiful settlement of Tinos gave birth to Yannoulis Chalepas, universally acknowledged as a prodigious artist who, despite the difficulties he faced throughout his life, managed to give unique form to white marble. "Chalepas is the modern Greek artist who, by whatever name we call him, should be considered inferior to his greatness…" mentioned Dimitris Pikionis about the artist from Tinos. Yannoulis Chalepas, creator of the emblematic Sleeping Girl, stamped his mark on Greek sculpture of the 19th and 20th centuries. The most renowned sculptor of modern Greek art also represents a "mythical" figure, with a tragic fate, having experienced the blow of mental illness and confinement, only to creatively return to his artistry after years.

Evangelos Mavrikakis - Hagiographer Evangelos Mavrikakis - Hagiographer

Evangelos Mavrikakis - Hagiographer

A Syros-born painter, iconographer, conservator of old furniture, and a respected member of the Syros community. To this day, he remains an unknown yet significant folk iconographer and painter. His works, though completely forgotten and lost today, are considered of great artistic value, adorning collections and churches. Many of his forgotten works still wait in warehouses for evaluation and recognition. Numerous pieces of his art remain completely unknown or unsigned, scattered across Greece. Presently, it is very challenging to locate them, requiring a particularly experienced and specialized eye familiar with the technique of the Syros iconographer. During the years he lived and worked in Syros, he was one of the most famous Syriots, engaged in significant social and artistic activities, and a member of the esteemed Syros society (although quite low-profile, which precisely explains why he was never acknowledged by the wider artistic status).

Nikiforos Lytras – Painter Nikiforos Lytras – Painter

Nikiforos Lytras – Painter

Nikiforos Lytras is considered the father of modern Greek painting. He was born in Pyrgos of Tinos, the village that offered great and pioneering personalities to the Art of post-revolutionary Greece, marking the modern Greek culture. He is considered, along with N. Gyzis, one of the most significant representatives of the mature generation of the Munich School and a pioneer in shaping the teaching of Fine Arts in Greece. Through his rich imagery, he managed to capture the then-Greek reality in an authentic manner. Famous works like the 'Kiss,' 'The Calends,' 'The Return from the Festival of Penteli' evoke the sense of the era. In his portraits, Lytras also attempts to depict the psychological state of the subjects, going beyond simple naturalistic imagery, which was innovative for his time. His paintings poetically narrate episodes from life during the artist's era. As an artist and a teacher, Lytras influenced the course of modern Greek painting. As he famously said, 'Love for beauty is the bridge between God and man.

Emmanuel Skordilis - Painter - Hagiographer

One of the most significant painters of the 17th century Cyclades, with a large number of works. He hailed from Crete, and it's reasonably assumed that he lived there until his mature age because an image in the Chrysopigi Monastery in Chania with the signature 'hand and work of Emmanouil, priest of Skordilis,' suggests, aside from a personal relationship with the monastery, that the painter left from there after the fall of Chania to the Turks (1645). The earliest known dated painting of his in the Cyclades is from 1647. He must have settled in Milos, where he signs: 'Remember, Lord, the good of Your servants, Manouil, priest of Skordilis, and Yakoumetos Modinos, the overseers in the image of the Almighty's Power.' One of his most famous works is the miraculous icon of Panagia Kanala in Kythnos, an exceptional piece of the Cretan school. Nikos Gatsos also mentions Panagia Kanala in the famous Cycladic piece that Manos Hadjidakis has set to music
